A practical starting point for a links golf holiday: choosing a base, booking rounds, packing for the coast and leaving room for the unexpected.
Choose a place, not a checklist.
A memorable links trip rarely needs a different hotel every night. Start with a region, choose a comfortable base and build the golf around it. A few rounds with time to explore often feel richer than a schedule of famous names connected by motorway miles. Agree on the pace with your travelling partners before anyone starts booking.
Confirm the round before the rest.
Visitor access differs from club to club. Check booking windows, handicap documentation, competition dates and cancellation terms directly. For a course with a ballot, build a trip that still works without winning a place. Treat a request, a waitlist and a confirmed reservation as three different things.
Leave room for the weather.
A coastal forecast can change the whole character of a round. Pack waterproofs, layers, spare gloves and footwear you already trust. Protect the things that need to stay dry. A flexible day in the middle of the trip gives you options, although it cannot guarantee that a club will move a booking.
Practise the shots you will actually use.
Before travelling, spend a little time with lower flights, running approaches and putting from beyond the green. You do not need to reinvent your swing. You do need a few comfortable choices when the wind makes your usual shot less appealing. Select tees around your ability and the day’s conditions, not the distance printed on a souvenir scorecard.
Make the 19th hole part of the plan.
Leave time after the round. A meal, a walk into town and a conversation about the shots that nearly came off are part of why people take these trips. If the group has different appetites for golf, a free afternoon can keep everyone looking forward to tomorrow.
